How did you change the world today?
A lot of us feel like we have to contribute to our existence in some meaningful way to feel good about ourselves and to be remembered. But in reality, for most of us, we will be forgotten very quickly and we will have no fame or contributions that place us in the history books.
Perhaps there will be images of us and records of our past existence in the digital archives of humanity, and that may sound a bit depressing, but there's something you may not realize.
You did change the world.
Don't believe me?
Well, let me give you an example.
About 30 years ago I made a friend with a co-worker and started to hang out with a different group of friends. Unrelated to them, I also met a girl, who is now my wife, and I met her family and friends. One day I invited some of my friends over for a party, and my wife invited some of her friends. One of her friends and one of my friends got along well. That turned into a relationship and later, a marriage, and later children. Those children grew up and had children of their own and so on.
From my friend and my wife's friend, over the course of several generations, there arises a big branch of a family tree, touching society and the world in many ways. Some of those individuals make great and significant contributions to the world, and that branch will continue to grow eternally and shape the world.
From it, millions of people will come into existence, and I can say that that they would not exist if it were not for me and my wife. If we had never have brought those two people together in the first place, then their paths would have to take a different journey and none of those people would ever be born.
So, while my wife and I have no children of our own, we can say that all that our actions have resulted in the creation of life and caused a major influence in history. Millions of people will never know that they owe their existence to us. I know some people will have a hard time wrapping their head around this concept, but it's true. It's a reality.
That is an example of how you do change the world. Each and every one of us has a huge influence on the future. It's not just through our acts of Cupidism, but even our most insignificant actions change the world.
Here's another example. You drop a penny on the ground and later, a child sees it and picks it up. The family of that child is on their way to an event and the mom sees the little boy has something and pauses to investigate. She sees it's a penny and takes is away because it's a choking hazard. The little boy makes a fuss and has a tantrum. The mom gets things settled down, but now they are running a bit behind. On the road, they pass an accident scene and emergency services have just arrived. Apparently, someone ran a red light, causing a devastating accident only minutes ago. What they don't realize, and never could, is that it happened exactly 5 minutes and 31 seconds ago - the exact same amount of time they were delayed because of the penny. If you had not have dropped that penny, then their circumstances would have converged such that they were the victims in that accident instead. Now that family lives on and it's all because you dropped a penny.
The point is, every action we take, can influence the world around us in some way, and the effect grows over time like a ripple in a pond. You have contributed to the destiny of humanity in more ways than you could ever imagine. It may not be apparent, but you can rest assured that have changed the world.
Indeed, every little decision we make in life changes the world, so ponder that for a while.
