The Mysterious World of Smoke
We see many things around us in the world everyday, but a photographer learns that there is a huge and hidden world of beauty to find. I look at something simple, the kind of things that ordinary people may only observe with only a vague and passing awareness, and think “What can I do with this?” "Is there some creation to be had here?"
I look for the universe of the unseen that can be discovered through the application of light and editing, and on this cold October day, my journey takes me to a box of incense. Today I will explore smoke as it drifts off the incense, carried on the micro breezes and eddies in my garage. I will capture those images and reveal the unseen.
Smoke photography is quite easy. All you need is some incense, camera, and a flash and you can get really cool images. The setup is simple and you can good photos easy enough, but the real magic happens once you take the images into Photoshop. After all, an image of smoke on it's own is not too exciting.
The creations from smoke are endless as it twists and drifts, locked in a swirling and translucent dance. Much of it is lost to the human eye, but you can capture and reveal it's ghostly and mystic nature, simply by adjust a few tone control.
Believe me, once you try this, you are sure to surprise yourself with the results. You can devise complex images with patterns and symmetry that explode into existence. I’ll tell you how...
I made a video on the process, free for anyone. Why did I do that? Because I felt like it and just wanted to share something fun that I think people will like. Also I get to test my video making ability, which kind of sucks, but I'm getting better.
So, sit back, relax, and check it out .
Share your creation and just have fun:)
